Viva ABBA! "S.O.S." U.K. top 40

Teee... diddli... diddli... diddli now then now then (as it happens) (!) Thank God for that (!) Tena Ladies and gentlemen, the mighty ABBA are back in the flesh with a brand new sound so they are. Britain looks to be a bit behind as far as this one is concerned as it had been released by the end of June on the continent and was already out of most European charts roundabout this time. I wonder why that is so I do.
Whooops (!) the battle of the doves has (paradoxically) begun between double dutch G.B.S. and occasional singer Jonathan King. G.B.S.`s version had been a nomber one in their home country, which I suppose enabled them to spread their wings and export themselves. Incidentally Jonathan King must have had a grudge against Dutch artists as he will subsequently rebaptise himself Father Abrapharts and the Smurps in 1978 just to massacre the infectious "smurf song" by turning it into "Lick a smurp for Christmas" [:o] [:o)] .
Rolf Harris lookalike brilliant whistler Roger Whittaker is enjoying his last hit in the U.K. chart (whence the title of his song). Happily enough he will then embark upon another 30-year career of Schlager singing over in Germany where he is now a household name. His amazing destiny is actually a most edifying example of what becomes of some artists who seem to have vanished from the surface of the Earth whereas they`re merely enjoying success next door, in another part of the world that is.
Therefore I reckon it`s about time we got some news of our long lost singing friends.

__Sheila "spacer" B. Devotion has returned to her glorious rainy native frogland.
__Cilla Black`s gone back to her sofa so she has.
__Vader Abraham`s returned to Smurfland.
__Joe Dolce has finally been reunited with his Mama in Italy and has eventually shaddap his face.

__Donna Summer is on vacation.
__Plastic Bertrand is hovering God knows where.
__Vanessa Paradis is still looking for a taxi.
__Vicky Leandros is said to be living in Lodz.
__Sylvia is travelling to Espana.
__Bonnie Tyler is lost in France.
__Chicago have moved to Boston.
__Boston have moved to Chicago.
__China Crisis have emigrated to the former republic of Bosnia Herzegovina one point la Bosnie Herzégovine un point (!) [8D]
__U.B.40 have gone back to the job center.
__Kate Bush is living in the woods.
__Doctor Hook has gone to the hospital.
__David Essex`s gone up to Yorkshire.

__The Three Degrees are taking good care of themselves.
__Lucifer have sold their house.
__Smokie have quit smoking.

__The Grateful Dead still live up to their name.

etc. etc. etc. but the big question however remains: "Where are the ABBAs?" [:o]
Has anyone spotted them recently? Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann, anyplace, anywhere, anytime [:o]

Still holding close to the number one spot is ol` (still) sexy Essex [:Z] . Elsewhere ol` (still) non-sexy Artless Garf [8(] is only having eyes for the number one position. Will he eventually make it next week with his sop-horrific tune? We`ll just have to wait and see. [°)]
Zooming up the chart like a rocket, spaced-out odd-looking "Sheila B. Devotion" male counterpart Bowie is in just outside the big ten this week with an old tune of his that he managed to refurbish with a few of his friends.Let`s hope his space trip goes o.k. for him otherwise he`ll definitely need the ABBAs to send out an S.O.S. to prevent him from vanishing into smoke, as befitting the ominous title by 5OOO Volts. Incidentally he`s followed by the great Smokey who will have to rebaptise themselves "Smokie" following a complaint lodged by some American clown. [°)]
Well, I don`t know if it`s time for love but it`s time I went to bed so it is. [:)(]

Now then, it looks like artful dodger Major Tom has finally reached his destination safe and sound in his pilchard tin can escorted by Pan`s people.
The landing on the n°1 spot went quite smoothly so ABBA`s S.O.S wasn`t needed in the end and as a normal consequence the famous four now enjoy their last week on the U.K. top 20 (for the time being). No doubt they"ll soon be back for some more chart adventures, always competing with the best ones such as: Laurel and Hardy, Chubby Checker, Demis Roussos, Osibisa, Glenn Miller, the B.C.R., Laurie Lingo and the Dipsticks, J.J. Barry, the Wurzels, Our Kid, Mireille Mathieu (whooops (!) sorry (!) , not Mireille Mathieu [8D] ), Jorghe Zamfir, Twiggy, Joe Tex, Piero Umiliani, Belle Epoque, Meco, Lalo Schifrin, the Sex Pistols, Bing Crosby, Yellow Dog, Jilted John, Driver 67, Funkadelic, M, Milk and Honey, Gonzalez, Peaches and Herb, the Dickies, the Monks, Patrick Hernandez, Judie Tzuke, Spyro Gyra, the Flying Lizards, Lena Martell, Sad Café, XTC, Iris Williams, Fiddler`s Dram, the Nolans, Stacey Lattisaw, Bad Manners, Adam and the Ants, Saint Winifred`s School Choir, Starsound, the Tom Tom Club, the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra, Gidea Park, Julio Iglésias, the Snowmen, Kraftwerk, Brown Sauce to name but a few.
One thing that could be said about the ABBAs is that , even if they didn`t reach n°1 with this one, they however managed to launch some sort of a fashion about song titles. This is aptly illustrated by this week`s n°9.Here are a few other examples just for the record:" A.B.C". by Direct Drive," B.a.b.y." by Rachel Sweet, "T.S.O.P"by M.F.S.B., "S.t.o.p. stop!" by the Dolly Dots, "I.G.Y". by David Fagen," E=MC2" by Big Audio Dynamyte," E.S.P." and "I.O.I.O." by the Bee Gees," F.L.M. "by Mel and Kim, "G.T.O." by Sinitta," H;a.p.p.y. radio" by Edwin Starr," I.O.U. "by Freeez," L.o.v.e. "by Al Green, "N.R.G." by Adamski," P.Y.T. "by Michaël Jackson, "S.O.S." by ABC, "T.V.C. 1-5" by David Bowie, "W.o.r.k." by Bow Wow Wow, "Y.M.C.A." by Village People, "R.o.c.k. in the U.S.A." from John Cougar Mellencamp.
